ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਕੇ ਜਿਉਣ ਦੀ ਨਸੀਹਤ ਹੈ; ਇਸ ਗਲ ਦਾ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦਰਅਸਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ | ਸਾਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਰਦਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਣ ਭਰੇ ਇਹ ਸੋਚਕੇ ਕਿ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਏਥੇ ਹੈ ਨਹੀਂ, ਫੇਰ ਗਲਤ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਰੋਲਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ | ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਏਥੇ ਹੀ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਪੀੜੀਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੋਚਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਖਲਾਕ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਲਈ ਗਿਰਵੀ ਰੱਖੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ | ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੀੜੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਗਲਤ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਜਾਣੇ ਇੱਕਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੋਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ | ਇਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਲਿਖੇ ਸਲੋਕ ਜੀ 1244 ਉਤੇ ਹੈ , ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰੋ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਾਓ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਇਸ ਜਗ ਵਿੱਚ, ਫੇਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਭ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਉਂ ਡਿੱਗਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ?

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਮਰਣਿ ਨ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਪੁਛੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ॥ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥ ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1244}

ਅਰਥ : ਮੌਤ ਕੋਈ ਮਹੂਰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੱਢਦੀ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਸ ਦਿਨ ਚੁਣਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ | ਕੁਝ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਦੇ ਆ ਗਏ ਉਹ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ | ਇੰਝ ਕੁਝ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਤੁਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਧੌਲਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਹਣੇ ਘਰ ਏਥੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ | ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਫੇਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ !

ਫੇਰ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇਵੋ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਸਲੋਕ ਉੱਤੇ ::

ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਪਈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸੰਦਾ ਕੋਟੁ ॥ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਖੋਟੁ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1244}

ਅਰਥ : ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਵਲਗਣ ਸੀ, ਸੋ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਢੇਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਹੀ ਪਈ । ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਨਿਤ ਖੋਟੇ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹੀ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੂੰ ਚੋਰ-ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਠਾਈ ਰੱਖਿਆ ।

ਭਾਵ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਕੁਝ ਆਰਸੇ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਸਮਾਂ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ! ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਬਣਾਕੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ?

ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਂਗਲੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੇ ਬੁਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਪਛਤਾਵੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਵੱਲ ਪਰਤ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਗਲ ਦਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ ਕਿ ਏਥੇ ਰੈਣ ਬਸੇਰਾ ਸਥਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ; ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਧਨਾਡ , ਪਾਪੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਕੂਚ ਕਰ ਗਏ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੈਕੇ | ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਹਿਮੀਅਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ | ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰਹਸਥ ਹੋਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਸਾਰਕੇ ਮਤਲਬ ਪ੍ਰਸਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੂਬਕੇ ਜੀਣਾ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਨਿਬੜ ਦਾ ਹੈ |

Death And Life

In the Gurbani, it is stressed that a person should live without ever forgetting that there is a time that will end his or her life; when the death is certain, why to take that path which needs dishonesty and exploitation to get rich or enjoy a luxurious life. Earning by dishonestful way and exploitation is of no use for the peace of mind; Gathering wealth and property through exploitation and leaving all that for the next generation is another folly a person commits. The History states that the so called rich and powerful people left this world without taking anything with them and their generations lost everything they gathered eventually. The Gurbani advises us to be hard workers; it reminds us about our death so that we should refrain from dishonestful living.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਮਰਣਿ ਨ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਪੁਛੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ॥

ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥

ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥

ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1244}

Salok mėhlā 1.

Maraṇ na mūraṯ pucẖẖi-ā pucẖẖī thiṯ na vār.

Iknĥī laḏi-ā ik laḏ cẖale iknĥī baḏẖe bẖār.

Laskar saṇai ḏamāmi-ā cẖẖute bank ḏu-ār.

Iknĥā ho-ī sākẖ-ṯī iknĥā ho-ī sār.

Nānak dẖerī cẖẖār kī bẖī fir ho-ī cẖẖār. ||1||

Sloka of First Nanak.

In essence: The death doesn’t ask for any special time or a lunar day or a weekday. In this world, there are some, who are ready to depart from here and some who are leaving. Some people are preparing to go and some are called for. The mortals leave behind them their army, drums and beauteous mansions. Oh Nanak! This way, the body crumbles and becomes dust.

Here is another slok of the Guru that says so as well:

Mėhlā 1. Nānak dẖerī dẖėh pa-ī mitī sanḏā kot. Bẖīṯar cẖor bahāli-ā kẖot ve jī-ā kẖot. ||2||

In essence: Oh Nanak! The body is like fortress of dust; in the ends, it crumbles down. Oh soul! You have kept the thief within you and all you have done are the deeds of falsehood.

It is only the humans who can analyze their acts and repent for their misdeeds and take a path of helping the humans, other lives and the entire nature they live in. When everyone departs from here then why to indulge in exploitation and self-centered activities. If one doesn’t remember the death time and considers to stay here forever, one lives in a fantasy and ruins one’s life that could be spent in a virtuous way.
