Do A Trade That Makes You Successful Spiritually

Regardless our establishments or the wealth we obtain, we remain in a cycle of ups and downs; what all that is worth if we remain deficient in everlasting joy? It must be comprehended that the fulfillment of our conceit instinct is always temporary. To take us out of that unending cycle, Sri Guru Nanak ji doesn’t ask us to abandon what we have but to grip on the reality of our origin, Ekankar. I am going to share with my readers his shabda, through which he guarantees us to be in an interminable bliss by simply walking on a path that finally leads us to our Creator from whom we have originated and who is identified with many names having presence all over without any particular form. It is on 22 to 23, SGGS:
Sirīrāg mėhlā 1.
Vaṇaj karahu vaṇjāriho vakẖar leho samāl. Ŧaisī vasaṯ visāhī-ai jaisī nibhai nāl.
Agai sāhu sujāṇ hai laisī vasaṯ samāl. ||1||
Raag Sree Raag, the bani of first Nanak.
In essence: Oh traders! Do trade in in a way that you hold on to the merchandise you traded in (here the merchandise is Akalpurakh’s name memory, because the Guru defines it in the ‘Rahao’ verses) and make sure you have only that merchandise, which may last with you. Hereafter, the wise Merchant will take the genuine article (It will become clear in the next verses that the metaphors of trade and Merchant are used for Akalpurakh’s name that is remembered by His name lovers; it means we should praise Him only, because all the rest things do not go with us).
ਵਖਰੁ  word is used for His name through which we remember Him in a process of surrendering to Him through which we realize His oneness and shed away our inclination to duality. The Guru basically asks us to remember Him in His love heartily:
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥  ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ਸਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bẖā-ī re rām kahhu cẖiṯ lā-e.  Har jas vakẖar lai cẖalhu saho ḏekẖai paṯī-ā-e. ||1|| Rahā-o.
Oh Brother! Recite Har’s name from the heart. Take with you Har’s praise, because it is the real thing, and Har, the merchant, will be pleased with. Pause.
Now no doubt remains that trading in Akalpurakh’s love is remembering His name in a way that our living gets saturated in His memory; it is important to say this here that remembering His name merely or in a conditioned way is of no use Rām rām sabẖ ko kahai kahi-ai rām na ho-e. Gur parsādī rām man vasai ṯā fal pāvai ko-e. ||1|| Anṯar govinḏ jis lāgai parīṯ. Har ṯis kaḏe na vīsrai har har karahi saḏā man cẖīṯ. ||1|| Rahā-o. . In essence: All utter “Ram Ram” but merely uttering so, the success in realizing Him is not obtained. With the Guru’s blessings, when Ekankar abides in one’s mind, one obtains the fruit of that (remembering Ram Pause.); instead the Guru wants the seekers to surrender their hearts abandoning the worldly show off.
As we start living in His love while uttering His name, at one stage, we don’t speak at all and settle within in His love entirely. This is what the Guru promotes in the above verses

PAGE 23
Jinā rās na sacẖ hai ki-o ṯinā sukẖ ho-e. Kẖotai vaṇaj vaṇanji-ai man ṯan kẖotā ho-e.
Fāhī fāthe mirag ji-o ḏūkẖ gẖaṇo niṯ ro-e. ||2||
How can those ones who do not have the wealth of Akalpurakh’s name obtain peace? As a result of involving in the false deeds for the false things, the mind and body become false. In such pursuits, the mortals endure a lot of pain just like the deer that gets caught in a trap; thus, they cry every day.

Kẖote poṯai nā pavėh ṯin har gur ḏaras na ho-e.  Kẖote jāṯ na paṯ hai kẖot na sījẖas ko-e.
Kẖote kẖot kamāvaṇā ā-e ga-i-ā paṯ kẖo-e. ||3||
As the treasury does not accept the counterfeit currency, those persons who are into bad deeds do not see Har, the Guru. The false ones are not worthy of Har’s honor, because by practicing falsehood, they cannot succeed in realizing Him. The false one remains into bad deeds, loses His honor and keeps coming and going.

Nānak man samjā-ī-ai gur kai sabaḏ sālāh.   Rām nām rang raṯi-ā bẖār na bẖaram ṯināh.
Har jap lāhā aglā nirbẖa-o har man māh. ||4||23||

Oh Nanak! The mind should be counseled through the Guru’s shabda. Those ones who are drenched in Har’s love carry no weight of sins and do not wander in doubt. They profit from praising Har’s name; consequently, the fearless, Har, abides in their minds.
How can the Creator who is without any form be made our darling? We need a special help in this regard; we need a Guru who has envisioned Him. The Guru is a spiritual counselor through whom the mind is reprogrammed to envision the unseen,139, SGGS:

Slok of Second Nanak.
In essence: (To be with Ekankar, one needs to change totally). Oh Nanak! To meet the master, Ekankar, who cannot be understood with the given eyes, ears, hands, feet and tongue, one has to overcome one’s self-conceit and live in utter humility by understanding His ordinance.
       How?
ਮ; ੨ ॥

Bẖai ke cẖaraṇ kar bẖāv ke lo-iṇ suraṯ kare-i.
Nānak kahai si-āṇī-e iv kanṯ milāvā ho-e. ||2||
The bani of Second Nanak.
In essence: (Literally the Guru elaborates his first Slok in this slok) Ekankar is heard and known, but why the taste of His union is not obtained? (Reason) How a lame and armless person can embrace anyone? (Neither have we arms to embrace Him, nor feet to walk toward Him; now the answer in detail) Make fearing from Ekankar your feet to walk toward Him; make your love for Him, your hands to hold Him and your meditation on Him your eyes to see Him. Nanak says: Oh wise bride! This is the way, the union with the Spouse occurs.
What we have like eyes, ears, feet, hands and tongues cannot help us in seeing the Creator, because they are guided by our self-conceit, greed, the worldly attachment, anger and lust; therefore, we fail to use them to see Ekankar. The Guru makes clear in this slok that overcoming conceit and embracing humility is important (living without eyes, hears, hands, feet and tongue). It is living in Ekankar’s fear and loving Him heartily that take us closer to Him, and it is His meditation that makes us behold Him.
The mind can go through three states. Three states of the mind are: that state of mind when it remains enveloped in the needs (physical or mental) of the body. The second state is when it gets keyed up through the Guru’s guidance and counsels itself to realize its inner-self/jyot-sroop. The third one is when it realizes that (beyond the limits of body) its real jyot/light is a part of the all-pervading Creator. Thus, the Guru counsels the seeker to take the mind to the third state and be one with Ekankar.
As we see the power of Maya attachment, we all will not attain the third state; nonetheless, the Guru desires from us to be in the third state eventually. We celebrate our Guru’s birthday again and again but why don’t we start loving the Creator sincerely as the Guru instructs us and pursue for the third state by pledging to him starting on his birthday? Living in His love, we will relish happiness by being pure, unbiased and above greed, attachment, lust and anger; then the third state will automatically become inevitable.

Ramkli Mehla 1, Dakhni, Onkaar

Continues from the last month…
Interestingly, contrary to the progressive-Sikh groups, the Guru points out the life and its forms in context of getting rid of its cycle; please read on, it is about not indulging in Maya but in His love:
ਜੋ ਆਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਇ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥

In essence: Those who come shall go also; being into Maya, they continue to repent. For them, there are eighty-four kinds of existences that do not decrease or increase. Those ones who are in love with the Creator are saved, because in His love, their desire for worldly valuables goes away and their strife ends. Whoever we see is bound to go; whom should we befriend? Only permanent is the eternal Creator who is my support and I surrender my mind and body to Him. Through the Guru’sinstruction, the mind is inspired. With the virtue of praising the Creator, one’s conceit (ਹਉ) is eradicated.
In the following, the Guru asks the followers to follow what is being said instead of falling for the Maya pursuits:
ਰਾਣਾ ਰਾਉ ਨ ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਤੁੰਗੁ ਫਕੀਰੁ ॥

In essence: None of the kings, or the nobles, or the poor, or the rich, or the beggar is to stay here (forever). All go by their turns; no one can comfort others (because one who comforts others has to go also). The path is pernicious and dreadful; it’s like passing through impassable ocean. I suffer horribly in repentance because of my bad deeds. Without any virtue, how can I go to my home (to my Master). The virtuous ones have met Ekankar, how can I meet Him? (Answer) If I contemplate and remember Ekankar in my mind, I can also be virtuous like them. The mortal is filled with sins but virtues are also within him. Without having the Satiguru and practicing his shabda, the virtues are not realized

In essence: Like the soldiers, the beings are in their bodies to act according to the allotted pay (support of life); those who praise Akalpurakh get profit of it. They abandon greed and sins; they praise Akalpurakh loudly and never get defeated (by negative forces because they praise Him and take His ordinance happily). How that person who questions his Master can be called a servant? Such a person loses His support and a chance to sit on a throne of eternal bliss. All glories are in the hands of my Beloved (Akalpurakh); He gives to that one with whom He is pleased. Before whom we can cry for help? He is doing everything; no one can do at his/her own.

In essence: I don’t see any other one, who is an eternal Master of all like Ekankar. Through the praise of His name, the eternal Master, who wards off miseries and pains, is obtained. After wandering through jungles and so on, now I have understood that the treasure of gems, jewels and pearls (virtues) is in the hand of the Satiguru; through him I can meet Ekankar by becoming sublime, pure and virtuous by falling in love sincerely with Him only. Oh Nanak! Those who are imbued with Him earn profit hereafter. Ekankar, who created the creation and the forms, is infinite and without limits; He can be meditated on through the Guru’s guidance.

In essence: My Master is the most beauteous one; there is no other King but Him. (OhPundit!) You listen to the Guru’s mantra; Akalpurakh will come to dwell in you. No one should be in any illusion that without the Guru’s blessings, Akalpurakh is obtained. Only that person who has the wealth of His name is rich. Such a person becomes perfect and praiseworthy with the Guru’s blessings. The Guru’s shabda is beauteous; by reflecting on it, Akalpurakh is obtained. As the soul-bride’s “self” (conceit) is eliminated, her pains are eradicated and she attains her Spouse, Akalpurakh.
Regardless how much wealth we accumulate, it never gives us happiness that can last  forever; nonetheless, living in His love fills us with everlasting bliss:

In essence: Usually we gather gold, silver, and wealth, but they are like poison and ashes/temporary. Those who gather wealth are called bankers, but their dilemma and duality waste their lives. The true ones gather Akalpurakh’s name that is invaluable. Those who remember the immaculate and pure Creator get true honor and respect; they say “Oh Akalpurakh! You are our beloved friend; you are all wise; you are the tank and its swan as well.” I sacrifice to those in whose minds the true Master dwells. (So, you) Only recognize Akalpurakh who has created the bewitching Maya. Those who have realized the all-wise Akalpurakh deem good and bad as the same (bitter or sweet comes from the same source: Akalpurakh).

In essence: Lacking tolerance, innumerable numbers of people have perished; their count is not possible; how can I count them? All of them have perished being distressed and bothered. When one understands the eternal Master, one becomes broadminded and one’s chains of narrow-mindedness go away. Oh Ekankar! Through the Guru’s shabda, one sees you and attains virtues of forgiveness and peace. You become one’s support, wealth, and concentration. You become manifest in one, and one’s mind is stilled. And one starts praising you extremely; however, (and opposite of it) in self-conceit, the beings, without His name, are distracted by Maya and get ruined. (Look at His play!) The infinite Creator Himself remains detached though He has created the beings and put conceit in them.
Here are few words on the wealth for which the world has gone crazy and to gain it, it remembers Him as well. Isn’t it sad that His love that frees us from all worries remains unimportant to us?
Sariste bẖe-o na jāṇai ko-e. Saristā karai so nihcẖa-o ho-e.
Sampai ka-o īsar ḏẖi-ā-ī-ai. Sampai purab likẖe kī pā-ī-ai.
Sampai kāraṇ cẖākar cẖor. Sampai sāth na cẖālai hor.
Bin sācẖe nahī ḏargėh mān. Har ras pīvai cẖẖutai niḏān. ||50||
In essence: No one knows the secret of the Creator; it happens what the Creator does assuredly. People contemplate Him to get wealth; however, one gets as per His will (preordained-writ). Because of the wealth, the people become servants and thieves; however, it doesn’t go with anyone; after one’s death, someone other owns it. Without His true name, there is no honor given by Him. One who drinks Ekankar’selixir (His name-love) gets liberated from this (the wealth-slavery).
In the following stanza, the Guru makes clear what a seeker needs to do to realize the eternal Creator. Thus, it becomes clear that without falling in love with Him, we remain stuck in the Maya quagmire. Following the Guru’s guidance can be considered a Sikh’s goal of life while living in this Maya dominated world:
ਹੇਰਤ ਹੇਰਤ ਹੇ ਸਖੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਰਾਨੁ ॥

In essence: I am wonder-struck to see that my ‘self-conceit’ is gone; my mind is attached to the Guru’s shabda and I have attained the divine knowledge”. I am weary of wearing of necklace, hair-strings, and bracelets (I am tired of making religious show); however, after meeting my Beloved Ekankar, I am in peace, and now I wear the garlands of virtues. Oh Nanak! Through the Gurulove for Ekankar is attained (developed). Check out by pondering over it, without Ekankar, none has obtained peace. (The Guru’s advice is that) Read about Ekankar, understand Him, and be in love with Him. Have Ekankar’s support, recite His name and meditate on His name.

In essence: Oh, my friend! Akalpurakh’s scribed writ cannot be erased. The Creator, who has created the universe, comes into mind (is met) with His grace. By reflecting on the Guru’s instructions, it is understood that all the glories are in the Creator’s hands. His scribed writ cannot be changed. Oh Nanak! Say: Oh Akalpurakh! Take care of us as it pleases you. With your grace, by reflecting on your name, peace is obtained. Those who are mind-slaves pass through miseries, but those who followed the Guruare saved. What can be said about Akalpurakh, who is not seen? I sacrifice to my Guru, who has shown Him within.
Whoever claims to be a religious teacher, must inspire the seekers to get attached to Ekankar by stilling his (her) mind in His loveonly such a teacher deserves to be called educated; nonetheless, that teacher who only follows his mind falls in the trap of Maya:
(Page 937 – 938)

Manmukẖ biḏi-ā bikarḏā bikẖ kẖate bikẖ kẖā-e.
Mūrakẖ sabaḏ na cẖīn-ī sūjẖ būjẖ nah kā-e. ||53||
In essence: Only that Pundit who learns to live by stilling his mind (in peace) is really educated. Through the education, he understands Akalpurakh, the Origin of everything and remains imbued with His name. The mind-slave sells the knowledge he has. Thus, he earns poison and consumes poison. Because the foolish pundit has no understanding (of Akalpurakh), he doesn’t contemplate His name.

In essence: A true Guru’s follower is actually a Pundit who educates his disciples to contemplate Ekankar’s name and tells them that only profit in this world is to gather (be with Him) His name. A true patti (education) is to implant Ekankar in the mind; thePundit should teach his disciples to contemplate Guru’s shabda. Oh Nanak! That person alone is a wise scholar, who has the garland of Ekankar’s name (It means: to be completely in love with Akalpurakh).
In a nut shell, it can be said that the Guru states that those who, forgetting the eternal Creator, worship other entities are in spiritual darkness; none is beyond His ordinance and all are subject to come and go from this planet but the Eternal Creator. To realize Him, a true Guru, who has realized Him, is needed, but the Guru’s guidance to realize Him comes only through His blessings, and to have His blessings, one needs to tread on a virtuous path free from greed, conceit, anger, lust and deep attachment. Once one becomes virtuous through the Guru’s guidance, one remains focus onEkankar, the eternal Creator. Having fear and love for Him, one gets rid of the Maya pursuits and remains in love with the Creator; consequently, Ekankaar blesses the Guru-oriented seeker. Then, loving the world creates no problem. Always remember that it is the attachment of the world that takes the seeker’s focus away from the Creator.

Continues from the last month…
At the last moment, when time to depart this planet comes, situation is not as usual as we think now. Thinking about that now, it is good to keep Him in the memory from right now:

In essence: losing the support of the Creator, the soul trembles a lot. The real supporter and glory-giver is Ekankar. When His support is there, nothing goes wrong. Oh Ekankar! You are eternal, so is the Guru and the contemplation on you; thus, you remain in the hearts of those who have your support and the Guru’s guidance. Only you are the support of Devtas, men, and the unsupported ones. You are pervading all over and you are the Donor of the donors. Wherever I look, I see you; you have no limits. Through the Guru’s guidance, it is learned that Ekankar pervades all places. He, who is great, unfathomable and infinite, gives away gifts without asking.

In essence: Oh Prabh! You are merciful; you are an embodiment of compassion and charity. After creating the Creation, you watch it. With mercy, you unite the beings with you; you destroy and build instantly. You are all-wise, all-watching and the most supreme Giver. You are eradicator of the mortals’ poverty and pain. You give your understanding through the Guru’s divine knowledge.

In essence: The mind of the foolish man remains engrossed in wealth; when it is lost, he greatly grieves. There are rare ones who gather the wealth of His name through His love. If by losing wealth, one’s mind gets absorbed in Ekankar, one should let it (the wealth) go. Surrender to Him completely and take only His support. When one’s mind goes in bliss with the Guru-shabda, one’s affairs of Maya come to an end. When Ekankar is met through the Guru, the mortals become good ones from bad ones. I have been looking for Him throughout the jungle, but I have found Him within. As the Guru unites us with Ekankar, we remain with Him and we are saved from the pains of birth and death.
Thus the Guru keeps the seeker on Akalpurakh’s  path on which treading is difficult, but he advises, one should not worry about the Maya and its attractions if one  wants to get close to Him. Keeping His memory (Naam) within, living becomes worry free.

In essence: By doing various religious rites, the mortals cannot get liberated, because without virtues, they face miseries of death. This way, they don’t make this world or hereafter better and they go in repentance. Such people have no divine knowledge or concentration; they have no faith or meditation. Without His name, how can they have the fearless Creator? How can they understand self-conceit (its influences). I am tired and I couldn’t know His limits. I have no friends, who are imbued with the Creator. Before whom should I cry for help? Oh Nanak! If I remember my beloved Akalpurakh, He can unite me with Him, because He is the one who is uniter. Akalpurakh, who has caused this separation, will unite me with Him through the Guru, who infuses love in us for the Infinite One.

In essence: Sin is bad but it is dear to the sinner, who gets into loads of sins and keeps making ostentation. If he abandons sinning, only then he can realize his “inner-self”, and to him there will be no sorrow, separation and sufferings. (If one remains in sins) how can one escape from falling into miseries and pains of death? How this coming and going can be over? Falsehood (sin) is bad (the mortals cling to it). Because of it, the mortals suffer death-fear. As the mind stays in sins, it gets enveloped with the entanglements of sins. Without His name, how can one be liberated (one cannot), because in sins, one suffers repeatedly?
While treading on a sinful path, there is no way, the Creator can be realized.

In essence: Crow like mortals fall into the net of Maya again and again. When they repent, what can happen then? Being trapped, they enjoy temptation (Of Maya), but they don’t understand its consequences. If one meets the Satiguru, only then one can comprehend it. Like a fish, one is trapped into the death net. Without the Guru, the beneficent, there is no salvation. Such people repeatedly come and go. There are some who remain imbued with Ekankar.  And, they become liberated never to be trapped again.
First of all, one should deem oneself as a guest here, because no one is forever here. The Body for which one works day and night is left alone when the breath stops. In its service, the entire life is spent and at the end, one leaves without realizing Him.

In essence: This body keeps calling the soul” oh brother” in love, but eventually, the soul becomes a stranger (goes away). The soul brother leaves her for home and the body-sister suffers in separation. Like a daughter, who involves in toy-playing while in father’s home, the soul involves in the worldly toy-attractions, which are very short lived. If the soul wants to have her Spouse, she should serve the Satiguru. Rare are those who understand this fact by meeting the Satiguru with love. All glories are in the hands of the Master, who gives them to that one with whom He is pleased. A rare person who is a true Guru’s follower will reflect on the Guru’s bani. This Satiguru’s bani is such that with it, the mind stills within.
Everything falls in His ordinance; He makes and destroys the creation at His own will.. Through the Guru only one gets connected to Him.

In essence: Prabh breaks and fashions (His creation); by fashioning again, He shatters, demolishes and builds it again to demolish; The omnipotent and carefree Prabh has the capability to dry up the filled-up tanks, and also, He fills them fully. Deluded by doubts, the people are crazy. Without the good luck, they find nothing (about Him). The Guru’s guidance is held in Prabh’s hand; a person to whom He attracts toward Him goes toward Him. (Through the Guru’s guidance) Such people whom He draws toward Him remain imbued with Him and they don’t repent again, The Guru’s followers seek Him and get stilled in their hearts. In the desirous-world, those who restrain their desires swim across the arduous ocean. When one understands one’s “inner-self” through the Guru’s blessings, one doesn’t remain acquisitive; this is the way to be dead while living.

In essence: Many died crying for more and more wealth, but it never went with anyone. The soul departs in dilemma and the wealth is forsaken right here. The death warns the mind, which is impure with Maya greed; the demerits go with the living one (Maya is left behind). If one’s mind has virtues, it becomes detached to Maya and gets stilled within. Without the name of Akalpurakh, puffed up in pride, people fall into miseries. In this short-lived play, the fortresses, mansions, palaces and courts are left here. Oh Nanak! Without Akalpurakh’s name, all life is a waste. Akalpurakh is wise and beauteous; He is self- accomplished and omniscient.
The Guru suggests looking at the Maya race that never ends and destroys a chance of getting connected to the Creator. Is it worth following Maya? Shouldn’t He be preferred to Maya?
CONTINUES…….
