ਸੰਗਤ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ; ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਉਮਰੇ ਗਲਤ ਸੰਗਤ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ, ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ; ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਜੋਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ; ਉਹ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ? 72 ਅੰਗ ‘ਤੇ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਕਰਤੇ ਦੀ ਸਿਫਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਕਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ| ਜਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਜਾਂ ਦੂਸਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਹੋਣ, ਉਸ ਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੇ; ਇਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਸਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ:

ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥ ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਧੁਹੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਹਥੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੇਤੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਕਰੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗੁ ਲਗਾਇ ॥ ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਲੋਭੀਆਂ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੪੦॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1417}

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿੱਥੋਂ ਤਕ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ, ਕਿਸੇ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, (ਲਾਲਚੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਖ਼ਰ ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਧੋਖਾ ਦੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਦਦ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਾਥ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਭੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ (ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਦੀ) ਕਾਲਖ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਦਾ) ਦਾਗ਼ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ (ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਨਾਲ) ਕਾਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਆਪਣੀ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹੀ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ (ਮਨ ਤੋਂ) ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।40। (ਡਾਕਟਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੰਘ )

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਇਹੋ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸੰਗਤ ਚੁਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੇਖੋ; ਬੁਰੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਵੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਦੇ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦੇ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਉਂ ਬੀਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਕੇ ਇੱਖਲਾਕੀ ਬਣੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰੋ !

STAY AWAY FROM THE GREEDY PEOPLE

One’s company affects one a lot; that is why in the Gurbani, a company of the Creator’s devotees is recommended (SGGS 72). In the following slok, the Guru advises to avoid a greedy person and mind slave.

ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਧੁਹੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਹਥੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੇਤੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਕਰੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗੁ ਲਗਾਇ ॥

ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਲੋਭੀਆਂ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੪੦॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1417}

Lobẖī kā vesāhu na kījai je kā pār vasā-e.

Anṯ kāl ṯithai ḏẖuhai jithai hath na pā-e.

Manmukẖ seṯī sang kare muhi kālakẖḏāg lagā-e.

Muh kāle ṯinĥ lobẖī-āŉ jāsan janam gavā-e.

Saṯsangaṯ har mel parabẖ har nām vasai man ā-e.

Janam maran kī mal uṯrai jan Nānak har gun gā-e. ||40||

In essence: As long as you can, do not trust a greedy person, because the greedy person deceives at a time when nothing can be done. By associating with the mind-slave, one faces disrepute (like them) The greedy people take bad names and depart from here by wasting their lives. Oh Har Prabh! Unite us with your devotees so that your name abides in our minds. Oh Nanak! By singing Har’s virtues, one’s filth of birth and death is washed off.

The Guru wants us to avoid the greedy and unethical people as they can affect us negatively; he asks to seek the company of those who remember and praise the Creator.

ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁੱਬਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਕਰਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ; ਹੇਠਲੇ ਸਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਹੋ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ | ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁੱਬੇ ਵੇਖਕੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਜੀ ਵੱਲ ਮੁੜਨ ਵੱਲ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਇਹ ਸਲੋਕ 1410 ਉੱਤੇ ਹੈ:

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੈਸੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਸਾਲਕੁ ਮਿਤੁ ਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਕੋਈ ॥

ਭਾਈ ਬੰਧੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1410}

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਦੁਨੀਆ (ਦੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ) ਅਜਬ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਪਾਸੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ ਦੱਸਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਪਿਆਰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮੁਕਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ) ਦੁਨੀਆ (ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ) ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਗੰਵਾਈ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।5। (ਡਾਕਟਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੰਘ )

ਜਦੋਂ ਕਰਤੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੀ ਭੇਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ, ਤਦ ਜਗਿਆਸੂ ਕੀ ਕਰੇ? ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਲਵੋ ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ; ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤ ਧੀ, ਦੋਸਤ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੰਡੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਉਠ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ|ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਅਦਿੱਖ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਧਰਮ ਮਿੱਥ ਕਿ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰਤੇ ਵੱਲ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ| ਜੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨੋਂਗੇ, ਫੇਰ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਘੇਰ ਲਵੇਗਾ; ਵੇਖੋ 1412 ਉੱਤੇ ਇਸ ਸਲੋਕ ਨੂੰ:

ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀਣੰ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥

ਅੰਧ ਵਰਤਾਵਾ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1412}

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਵਰਤਣ-ਵਿਹਾਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਹੈ।22 ( ਡਾਕਟਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੰਘ )

ਫੇਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ? ਵੇਖੋ ਹੱਥਲਾ ਸਲੋਕ :

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਮੂਲੋ ਨ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੨੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1412}

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦੀ। (ਇਸ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ) ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਬਣਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਲਗਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦੀ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਕ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-) ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਉਹ) ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਭੀ ਪੱਲੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ) (1412)

ਜੋ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਖੁਦ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰਹਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਭਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਕੀ ਸਮਝਾ ਸਕੇਗਾ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ; ਜੋ ਨਸੀਹਤਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਨੇ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ, ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੱਲਦੇ ਵੀ ਰਹੇ; ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਯੋਧਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ| ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਟੱਕਰਾਂ ਮਾਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ | ਗਿਆਨ ਬਿਨ ਉਂਝ ਵੀ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਬੁੱਕਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਅੱਜ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਚ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਅੰਧ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ਼ ਇਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਸਬੂਤ ਹਨ | ਗੱਲ ਸੁਹਿਰਦਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਦੀ ਹੈ | ਫੈਸਲਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਹੀ ਪੈਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਂ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਨਦੀ ਪਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਖਲੋਤੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ?

Guru Nanak in context of today’s world

Guru Nanak always advises the believers not to get drenched in the Maya; instead, they, he advises, should involve in the Creator’s praise. We can see his advice in the following slokas on SGGS 1410 and 1412. Wherever, Guru Nanak ji saw the people involved in the worldly attachment and superstitions, he advised them to turn toward the Creator and to get involved with Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੈਸੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਸਾਲਕੁ ਮਿਤੁ ਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਕੋਈ ॥

ਭਾਈ ਬੰਧੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1410}

Nānak ḏunī-ā kaisī ho-ī. Sālak miṯ na rahi-o ko-ī.

Bẖā-ī banḏẖī heṯ cẖukā-i-ā. Ḏunī-ā kāraṇḏīn gavā-i-ā. ||5||(1410)

In essence: Oh Nanak! What has happened to this world, there is no guide or a friend, who can lead the people to a right path? For keeping up with one’s brothers and kinsmen, one has disregarded one’s love for the Creator. Thus, for this world, the mortals have lost their righteousness (faith).

When a true Guru is met, one gets the divine knowledge and falls in love with the Creator; otherwise, one remains enveloped in the darkness:

ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀਣੰ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ ਅੰਧ ਵਰਤਾਵਾ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨੨॥

Gi-ān hīṇaŉ agi-ān pūjā. Anḏẖ varṯāvā bẖā-o ḏūjā. ||22||(1412)

In essence: Bereft of divine knowledge, one likes worshiping in ignorance, and thus one’s love for duality (Maya) keeps one blind from the divine knowledge.

So, from where to get the divine knowledge? The true Guru. When a true Guru is met, one gets the divine knowledge and falls in love with the Creator; otherwise, one remains enveloped in the darkness. Read the following:

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਮੂਲੋ ਨ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੨੩॥

Gur bin gi-ān ḏẖaram bin ḏẖi-ān. Sacẖ bin sākẖī mūlo na bākī. ||23||

In essence: Without the Guru, the knowledge that makes Ekankar realized is not obtained and without realizing the Guru’s knowledge, one’s mind doesn’t succeed in having complete mediation (of Ekankar); without His meditation, the main purpose of life is not realized. (This Slok must be read in context of previous Sloka number 22).

A person who is already drenched in the Maya love, how can he guide others? What the Sikh Gurus have said, they put that in practice. That is why they created the true devotees and warriors to fight against the injustice. Without the divine knowledge, one remains in the dark; we see how people get exploited by the fake Gurus who put them in superstitions. The most important thing is to get imbued with the Creator. A decision is due to make: either we should cross the Maya river or we should just get stuck in it.
