ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਰੂੰ, ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਕੈਂਚੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਈ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਦੇਕੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਜੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ | ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੈ ਲੈਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਵੱਲ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਫੇਰ ਕਦੇ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ | ਜੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਉਗਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਾ ਕੱਢੇ, ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ | ਦੂਜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਲਈ ਸੱਚਾ ਬਣਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ | ਸਾਡੀ ਵਿਗੜੀ ਇੱਜਤ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਕੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ; ਇਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੇਠ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸਲੋਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਓ ਵਿਚਾਰੀਏ:
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥ ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥ ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥ ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥ ਮਾਹੁ ਪਖੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੰਢੈ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 955}
ਅਰਥ: (ਰੂੰ ਵੇਲਣੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵੇਲ ਕੇ ਪਿੰਞਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੱਤ ਕੇ (ਕੱਪੜਾ) ਉਣਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਟੋਟੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਧੁਆਣ ਲਈ) ਖੁੰਬ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਕੈਂਚੀ ਕਤਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਦਰਜ਼ੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸਿਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਪਾੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੀਪ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਗੁਆਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਫਿਰ ਬਣ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੱਪੜਾ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਾਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਢ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਗੰਢਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ) ਕੋਈ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਅੱਧਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਤੱਗਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਘੜੀ ਦੋ ਘੜੀ (ਥੋੜਾ ਚਿਰ) ਹੀ ਹੰਢਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਪਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਰੂਪ ਪਟੋਲਾ) ਕਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਸੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਦੇ ਪਾਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ) । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਖਸਮ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ।1। (ਡਾਕਟਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੰਘ)
ਸਾਡੀ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਰੀਝ ਸੂਈ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇੰਝ ਜੋੜੇ ਕਿ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਦੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੀਏ ਹੀ ਨਾ | ਦੁਨਿਆਵੀ ਕੈਂਚੀਆਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੀਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੂਈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਇੰਝ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੁੜਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕਦੇ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ | ਇਹ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੂਰੀ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਕੈਂਚੀਆਂ ਸੰਗ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਜੋੜਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਸੂਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਗ |

To Get Imbued with Creator
Guru Nanak counsels his followers to get imbued with the Universal Creator with sincerity by giving us an analogy of cotton that goes through a long process to be worn by someone. In other words, he says that one should need to do hard work to get one with the Creator. Let us ponder over his Sloka on 955 and 956, SGGS:
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥
ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥
ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥
ਮਾਹੁ ਪਖੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੰਢੈ ॥
ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥
Salok mėhlā 1. Vel piñā-i-ā kaṯ guṇā-i-ā.
Kat kut kar kẖumb cẖaṛā-i-ā.
Lohā vadẖe ḏarjī pāṛe sū-ī ḏẖāgā sīvai.
I-o paṯ pātī sifṯī sīpai Nānak jīvaṯ jīvai.
Ho-e purāṇā kapaṛ pātai sū-ī ḏẖāgā gandẖai.
Māhu pakẖ kihu cẖalai nāhī gẖaṛī muhaṯ kicẖẖ handẖai.
Sacẖ purāṇā hovai nāhī sīṯā kaḏe na pātai.
Nānak sāhib sacẖo sacẖā ṯicẖar jāpī jāpai. ||1|| (955 to 956)
Slok of First Nanak
In essence: First the cotton goes through ginning process; then it is corded, spun and woven; the cloth is laid out, washed and bleached white; the tailor cuts with scissors and sew it with the thread. Oh Nanak! In the same way, one’s tattered honor is sewn up through Akalpurakh’s praise and then one lives in a rightful way. If the cloth is worn off, it is mended with the needle and thread, but it doesn’t last for a month or so; if one stitches oneself with Akalpurakh’s name, one never wears out (remains intact). Oh Nanak! Akalpurakh is eternal, but He is realized only if we remember (contemplate) Him.
The Guru advises us to become virtuous by getting rid of flaws we are enveloped with. Sincerity we fill in our love for our Creator goes a long way. As the cotton goes through a long process to become worthy of to be worm by the people, a true devotee works hard to replace his or flaws with the virtues to become worthy of becoming one with the Creator. Any show off or rituals will not help in this regard. As the needle sews the cloth, His praise connects us with Him lastingly. It is up to us to stay close to the people who are like scissors who take us away from Him or to be with those ones who connect us with Him as the needle sews the clothes.
