The Guru On The Pilgrimaging –

http://www.gursoch.com

(Its English version is at the end)

Ŧirath nāvaṇ jā-o ṯirath nām hai.
Ŧirath sabaḏ bīcẖār anṯar gi-ān hai.

Gur gi-ān sācẖā thān ṯirath ḏas purab saḏā ḏasāhrā.
Ha-o nām har kā saḏā jācẖa-o ḏeh parabẖ ḏẖarṇīḏẖarā.

Sansār rogī nām ḏārū mail lāgai sacẖ binā.
Gur vāk nirmal saḏā cẖānaṇ niṯ sācẖ ṯirath majnā. ||1||

Ih man kāsī sabẖ ṯirath simriṯ saṯgur ḏī-ā bujẖā-e.
Aṯẖsaṯẖ ṯirath ṯis sang rahėh jin har hirḏai rahi-ā samā-e. ||4||
Nānak saṯgur mili-ai hukam bujẖi-ā ek vasi-ā man ā-e.
Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai sabẖ sacẖ hai sacẖe rahai samā-e. ||5||6||8||
Mėhlā 1.
Nāvaṇ cẖale ṯīrthī man kẖotai ṯan cẖor.
Ik bẖā-o lathī nāṯi-ā ḏu-e bẖā cẖaṛī-as hor.
Bāhar ḏẖoṯī ṯūmṛī anḏar vis nikor.
Sāḏẖ bẖale aṇnāṯi-ā cẖor sė cẖorā cẖor. ||2||

The Guru On The Pilgrimaging

As we read the Guru’s words on the pilgrimaging, we clearly learn that it has no importance in his mind; instead, he emphasizes to clean the mind, which doesn’t need water of a special place. Then why the Sikhs are seen rushing to the Gurdwaras in Deccan thinking their Guru calls them to be there at least once in a life time? Who has put such a kind of thinking in their minds? I don’t know. Should we listen to what the Guru says or believe what some other people say? I would prefer the Guru to all. If the Sikhs just go there to see their Historical Gurdwaras, then it is alright, but if they deem it as a pilgrimage, it is not what the Gurbani says. I don’t go to see Gurdwaras in Deccan, because there they sacrifice an innocent goat every year, which is condemned in the Gurbani. Instead of watching silently such a kind of practice that brings blot on the Sikhi, the Sikhs should openly oppose it. For an example, if they don’t go there for one year in its protest, the administration of the Gurdwaras will stop sacrificing a life outright as they will notice the income going down. First let us look at a shabda that elaborates on the pilgrimaging on 687, SGGS:
Ŧirath nāvaṇ jā-o ṯirath nām hai .
Ŧirath sabaḏ bīcẖār anṯar gi-ān hai.
Gur gi-ān sācẖā thān ṯirath ḏas purab saḏā ḏasāhrā.
Ha-o nām har kā saḏā jācẖa-o ḏeh parabẖ ḏẖarṇīḏẖarā.
Sansār rogī nām ḏārū mail lāgai sacẖ binā .
Gur vāk nirmal saḏā cẖānaṇ niṯ sācẖ ṯirath majnā. ||1||

In essence: I do pilgrimage-ablution, but my pilgrimage-ablution is Akalpurakh’s name; reflecting on the Guru’s shabda works as my ablution, because it fills me with the divine knowledge. The Guru’s divine knowledge is an eternal pilgrimage. For me, it is my ten auspicious days and the ever Dussehra. “Oh Akalpurakh! You are the Protector of the world! I beg from you only your name”. The world is inflicted with the Maya disease (Vices), but Akalpurakh’s name is its curing medicine. Without Akalpurakh, the Maya filth is attached to the mortals. The Guru’s teaching is pure; it enlightens the mind always, and reflecting on it is like doing ablution at a pilgrimaging place.
Now read what the Guru says about those who go on pilgrimaging while keeping their minds filled with vices; it is on 789, SGGS:
Mėhlā 1.
Nāvaṇ cẖale ṯīrthī man kẖotai ṯan cẖor.
Ik bẖā-o lathī nāṯi-ā ḏu-e bẖā cẖaṛī-as hor.
Bāhar ḏẖoṯī ṯūmṛī anḏar vis nikor.
Sāḏẖ bẖale aṇnāṯi-ā cẖor sė cẖorā cẖor. ||2||
Slok of First Nanak.
In essence: People with wickedness in the minds and engrossed bodily in vices, go to pilgrimaging places to bathe. They clean one part of the filth-the bodily filth-but they get filth through their hypocritical acts. How can they become pure? Their nature is bitter (evil) as a gourd; if it is washed from outside, still within it remains the pure poison (bitterness); therefore, Har’s devotees are better off by not bathing on pilgrimaging places; good people remain good without ablutions and the thieves remain thieves even after doing the ablution.
Real pilgrimage is cleaning the mind, because once it becomes pure by eradicating all the vices, it becomes a pilgrimaging place itself:

Ih man kāsī sabẖ ṯirath simriṯ saṯgur ḏī-ā bujẖā-e.
Aṯẖsaṯẖ ṯirath ṯis sang rahėh jin har hirḏai rahi-ā samā-e. ||4||

When the Satiguru enables the follower to understand Har, his/her mind becomes a pilgrimage of Banaras and the knower of simiritis. Thus, the cleansed mind becomes equal to Sixty-eight pilgrimaging places as in it, Har dwells always.
Let us follow the Guru and start cleaning our minds; with the Creator’s memory, let us get rid of our vices. By doing so, we will be doing the real pilgrimage then, and we will not need to go on the established pilgrimages, for according to the Guru, cleaning the mind is a real pilgrimage. If the innocent lives are sacrificed at our sacred Guru houses, it will be an insult to the Guru. The sacrifice being done at the Gurdwaras in Deccan must be stopped.

Our Duality And The Creator -

http://www.gursoch.com

(Its English version is at the end)

Our Duality And The Creator

It is just like crossing a line to get attached to the Guru to eliminate duality and getting saturated in the love of Prabh who is all pervading. This act alone attaches us with religious and ethical feelings and breaks us away from the ego we are enveloped in. Let us ponder over this shabda of the Guru on 223, SGGS:
Ga-oṛī mėhlā 1.
Ḏūjī mā-i-ā jagaṯ cẖiṯ vās. Kām kroḏẖ ahaʼnkār binās. ||1||
Raag Gaurhi, the bani of First Nanak.
In essence: The heart of the world is in Maya, and because of that, it gets ruined in lust, wrath, and conceit.
Remember that the Guru doesn’t’ favor deserting the world, instead he questions our living without keeping His memory in our minds, because, according to him, we go astray as we start living forgetting Him by being indulged in the Maya pursuits. Thus, it becomes a cause of our pains and sufferings.
This idea is expressed in the following verses:
Ḏūjā ka-uṇ kahā nahī ko-ī. Sabẖ mėh ek niranjan so-ī. ||1|| Rahā-o.
How can I say there is another one? There is none other than Akalpurakh; only He, the immaculate one, permeates all. Pause.
Now this is to understand that if whatever we see is the Creator Himself, then why do we perceive so much conflicts in the world? A part of its answer lies in the first verses and the second one is this that unlike the Guru, we live in duality, because the base of Maya is duality; in other words, our source is only one: our Creator, but we are strongly convinced to have our separate existence than the Creator. As per the spiritualistic thought, our approach is immature, because after learning the reality from the Guru, we remain stuck with our own thoughts like a child who remains ready to touch the fire if not counselled. For example, if you believe in what the Guru says but I don’t, then our animosity will remain in existence; nonetheless, in this context I will remain in an exasperating situation but not you, since you will remain settle in a state of mind lacking duality. I will remain stuck in finding faults in you; however, you will remain engrossed in Prabh’s love; only this is the difference.
This is the basic principle of the Sikhi that everything, life, place and beyond is the Creator Himself; obviously, Maya is here as per His ‘will’.
Ḏūjī ḏurmaṯ ākẖai ḏo-e. Āvai jā-e mar ḏūjā ho-e. ||2||
It is the bad-intellect that causes the mortal to say that Akalpurakh’s creation is separate from Him; because of that bad thinking, the mortal comes and goes and remains separated (from Him).
It means that our tainted intellect retains our duality of being a separate existence from the Creator and doesn’t let us get coupled with Him. Deem it as a game of Maya; whoever got possessed with it will keep duality intact, because its base is Maya; however, the one who comprehends this illusion will not embrace duality; thus, one will never accept one’s separate existence from Him. This state of mind is attained through drenching in His love; it is very difficult but not impossible.
Above, it is made clear that those ones, who think that the Creator is totally separate from His creation, are in the duality. It is the mortal’s duality or faith, in other than the Creator that puts him/her on a wrong path. To realize the above idea, let’s understand the word, “ਦੋਇ /Doe”. It is explained in the following:
Ḏẖaraṇ gagan nah ḏekẖ-a-u ḏo-e. Nārī purakẖ sabā-ī lo-e. ||3||
I don’t see any other than Him on the earth or the sky; Akalpurakh permeates the women, the men, and the entire universe.
Above the Guru expresses that state of mind in which the duality is ended and an experience of being one with Akalpurakh is realized, because when the sense of ‘I’ is gone, then how a sense of being separate from Him can exist? There is no difference between a woman and a man though they look different; it is our ill intellect that makes us see them separate.
Rav sas ḏekẖ-a-u ḏīpak uji-ālā. Sarab niranṯar parīṯam bālā. ||4||
I see the light of the Sun and the Moon, but I see the young (ever fresh and evergreen) beloved Akalpurakh present in all.
All what is seen or unseen motivates us to see Him present all over; nonetheless, duality makes a person realize to be of a separate being than the Creator. The other truth is this that those who live in duality have turned their backs toward Prabh. They live under it and remain far away from Him. In this context, it should be realized that if a few people succeed in eliminating their feelings of duality, still the worldly conflicts will stay. Throughout this Shabda, the Guru keeps identifying Him in all: everything and everywhere.
Kar kirpā merā cẖiṯ lā-i-ā. Saṯgur mo ka-o ek bujẖā-i-ā. ||5||
As Ekankar has showered mercy on me, I am attached to Him. I have realized Him through the Satiguru.
Duality is eliminated by treading on the Guru’s path; otherwise, ill intellect saturates us in duality; however, one spends life by envisioning Him all over with the Guru’s blessings. This situation is a state of bliss in which the mind settles down within.
Ėk niranjan gurmukẖ jāṯā. Ḏūjā mār sabaḏ pacẖẖāṯā. ||6||
Through the Guru Ekankar, the immaculate one, is known and the concept of ‘two’ (the Creation is distinct) is eradicated.
The Guru oriented one kills his/her duality through the Guru’s teachings (sees none but Him); thus, the Guru’s teaching is to live by eliminating self-conceit and duality and to become able to see Him all over.
Ėko hukam varṯai sabẖ lo-ī. Ėkas ṯe sabẖ opaṯ ho-ī. ||7||
Alone Har’s ordinance is prevalent in all the worlds, and from Him, all have emanated.
Then it is comprehended the source of all is the Creator and all remain under His ordinance; here it must be realized that duality is also a part of His ordinance.
Rāh ḏovai kẖasam eko jāṇ. Gur kai sabaḏ hukam pacẖẖāṇ. ||8||
There are two ways: the worldly way and the spiritual way. The master of both ways is Akalpurakh (both paths do exist as per His ‘will’). (Oh mortal!) through the Guru’s shabda, understand Akalpurakh’s ordinance (of the both paths).
In the above verses, the Guru says that there are only two paths: one is to live by being guided by ill intellect and the other one is to live as per the Guru’s advice; nonetheless, the creator of the two paths is Him. In his ordinance, the mortal embraces duality and in His ordinance, he forsakes it; therefore, through the Guru’s advice, we must recognize His ordinance and learn how to get out of our duality complex.
Sagal rūp varan man māhī. Kaho Nānak eko sālāhī. ||9||5||
Oh Nanak! Say this: I praise only Akalpurakh, who is in the all forms, castes, and the minds of all (because there is no other than Him in all, period).
If the Guru doesn’t see any difference between the creator and His creation, why those who are his followers don’t have that kind of attitude? The Guru counsels his followers to praise The Creator who is present in all and everywhere. He advises them to live by abandoning the conceit that deems a separate identity than the Creator so that through His praise they can absorb in Him. Living being one with the Creator is a Sikh’s ultimate goal; therefore, in the Sikhi, it is not valued to live while creating conflicts with Him and His creation or to love Him with an attitude to grind one’s ax, or in a trade behavior which means if He listens to our prayers we will praise Him.
Wishes!

Envisioning The Invisible

Akalpurakh is beyond birth and form. How can we see Him then? That is the reason that the atheists deny His existence; obviously, their stand is not different than a story of a frog living in a small pond that thinks there is no bigger pond than its own pond since it never gets out of it to see elsewhere. The true spiritual people elevate themselves to that state of mind in which they see nothing but Him and openly state, “ਸਭੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ (SGGS:485)’Whatever we see is Akalpurakh, nothing but Him”. We respect such a Sant or a Guru hoping to be blessed to envision Akalpurakh. The Sikh Gurus show us very simple and direct path to envision Him leaving the responsibility on us to tread on that. In this context, we will ponder over the Guru’s 2 slokas on SGGS, 139 through which he counsels us what should we do in His quest.

Let us see first on 1256, SGGS, about the path First Guru shows; in this context, we must realize why we try to see the formless Creator with our open eyes; the Second Guru elaborates on our wrong thoughts in this context.

Guṇ gobinḏ na jāṇī-ahi mā-e. Aṇdīṯẖā kicẖẖ kahaṇ na jā-e.
Ki-ā kar ākẖ vakẖāṇī-ai mā-e. ||1|| Rahā-o. {SGGS-1256}

In essence: Oh mother! Akalpurakh’s virtues cannot be understood fully; He is invisible; therefore, He cannot be expressed fully. Oh, my mother! How can we express Him? Pause.

Ūpar ḏar asmān pa-i-āl. Ki-o kar kahī-ai ḏeh vīcẖār.
Bin jihvā jo japai hi-ā-e. Ko-ī jāṇai kaisā nā-o. ||2||

Ekankar is contained (present) up in the sky and in the nether regions (all over). Tell me how can we express Him?  If one contemplates Him in one’s heart without using one’s tongue (Totally getting absorbed in His memory), only then one can know how His name is felt (how Naam is contemplated)?

Now the question comes to one’s mind that if one keeps trying to remember the invisible Creator, can one envision Him? Let us now try to find its answer through the second Guru’s words:

In essence: (To be with Ekankar, one needs to change totally). Oh Nanak! To meet our Master, we must realize His ordinance; we need to see Him without using our eyes, hear about Him without using our ears; we need to go close to him without using our feet and work to be with Him without using our hands; this is the way to live (being dead) without an iota of conceit. (one has to overcome one’s self-conceit and live in utter humility by understanding His ordinance, because the given eyes, ears, hands, feet and tongue do not help us to be with Him).

Please contemplate what does mean by living by being dead; basically, it means to live without any sort of attachment and conceit. In such a state of mind, our sensual organs become weaker than us and they stop harassing us. This is the first step to envision Him. In the next sloka, the Guru enlightens us  to overcome our urges. Thus, we never leave the light of wisdom.

The bani of Second Nanak.
In essence: (How to meet Ekankar, the answer is given here. It is explained how to live without given eyes and ears and so on. Literally the Guru elaborates his first Slok in this slok) Ekankar is heard and known, but why the taste of His union is not obtained? (Reason) How a lame and armless person can embrace anyone? (Neither have we arms to embrace Him, nor feet to walk toward Him; now the answer in detail) Make fearing from Ekankar your feet to walk toward Him; make your love for Him your hands to hold Him and your focus on Him your eyes to see Him. Nanak says: Oh, wise bride! This is the way, the union with the Spouse occurs.

Our eyes, ears, feet, hands and tongues are guided by our self-conceit, greed, the worldly attachment, anger and lust; therefore, we fail to use them to see Ekankar, or to embrace Him. The Guru makes clear that overcoming conceit by embracing humility is important (living without eyes, hears, hands, feet and tongue). It is our living in Ekankar’s fear and loving Him heartily that take us closer to Him, and it is our focus on Him that makes us behold Him.

Here two points need to be contemplated: what is meant by the Creator’s fear? What is meant by being in love with Him? We fear from the law thinking if it is broken, we will endure punishment. When we fear from Akalpurakh, we are supposed to be firm believer of His immense power and in His fear, we don’t do a deed which is bad. This way, our life remains free from any bad blot. We don’t think to displease our Creator, because we respect Him just as we don’t want to disrespect our elders. Obviously, we refrain from wrong acts in His respect.

Our relations with our close relatives like father, mother, husband, wife, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters and friends survive because of our sincerity; if insincerity creeps in our relations, they break down. As we keep sincerity in our love for our relatives, we shouldn’t become insincere toward our Creator, since we urge to remain connected to Him in love by remaining pure. Such kind of our fear and love for Him connect us to our invisible Creator forever by keeping us untainted. If we become two faced in our love for Him, our relations with Him are severed; however, our genuineness toward Him helps us uniting with Him.

Thus, our invisible Creator remains in us as a cozy memory to guide us in our lives. Then the meaning of ‘I Am Him and He is Me ('ਸੂਹੁੰ)’and ‘whatever we see is Akalpurakh, nothing but Him (ਸਭੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ )’ is understood.
