To remain close to the Creator

 To remain close to the Creator | GURSOCH-The Gurbani Connection

On 219 SGGS, Ninth Nanak advises his followers not to involve in the Maya so that they can realize the Creator. Here is that shabda:

Ik-oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

There is only one All Pervading Akalpurakh, who is obtained with the blessings of the Satiguru.

Rāg ga-oṛī mėhlā 9.

Raag Gaurhi, the bani of Ninth Nanak.

Sāḏẖo man kā mān ṯi-āga-o.

Kām kroḏẖ sangaṯ ḏurjan kī ṯā ṯe ahinis bẖāga-o. ||1|| Rahā-o.

In essence: Oh devotees of Akalpurakh! Abandon the conceit of your minds. Always remain away from lust, anger, and evildoers. Pause.

   Sukẖ ḏukẖ ḏono sam kar jānai a-or mān apmānā.

Harakẖ sog ṯe rahai aṯīṯā ṯin jag ṯaṯ pacẖẖānā. ||1||

A person who takes comfort and pain, honor or insult alike and remains aloof from joy and sorrow has realized Akalpurakh (the essence of life) in the world.

   Usṯaṯ ninḏā ḏo-ū ṯi-āgai kẖojai paḏ nirbānā.

Jan Nānak ih kẖel kaṯẖan hai kinhūʼn gurmukẖ jānā. ||2||1||

A person who seeks the supreme status of salvation remains aloof from praise and criticism. Oh Nanak! This game is difficult, and through the Guru, a rare person understands it.

So, we should listen to the Guru and work hard to over come our conceit to live in His love.

Remember The Old Age And The Death As Well

 www.gursoch.com

On SGGS 92, Bhagat Tirlochan says that the mortals have so much engrossed in Maya that they have forgotten that they have to face the old age and the death as well. Let us ponder over this shabda:

Sirīrāg Ŧrilocẖan kā.

Mā-i-ā moh man āglaṛā parāṇī jarā maraṇ bẖa-o visar ga-i-ā.

Kutamb ḏekẖ bigsahi kamlā ji-o par gẖar johėh kapat narā. ||1||

Raag Sree Raag, the bani of Tirlochan.

In essence: Oh man! You are too much drenched into the Maya love and you have forgotten the fear of old age and death. Oh, wicked man! Seeing your family, you blossom like a lotus and look with bad intentions at other’s homes.

Ko-ī ko-ī sājaṇ ā-e kahai. Mil mere bīṯẖulā lai bāhṛī valā-e.

Mil mere rama-ī-ā mai lehi cẖẖadā-e. ||1|| Rahā-o.

The death is coming with speed and I will not be able to stay here; a rare friend comes to say, “Oh my Akalpurakh! Embrace me; meet me and rescue me”. Pause.

Mā-i-ā mūṯẖā cẖeṯas nāhī janam gavā-i-o ālsī-ā. ||2||

Oh Mortal! Having control over others and diverse pleasures, you have forgotten Akalpurakh and you think that you are permanent in this world. Oh, lazy one! You, bewitched by Maya, don’t remember Akalpurakh’s name; you have wasted your life.

Bikẖam gẖor panth cẖālṇā parāṇī rav sas ṯah na parvesaʼn.

Mā-i-ā moh ṯab bisar ga-i-ā jāʼn ṯajī-ale saʼnsāraʼn. ||3||

Oh Mortal! The path you tread on is very dark, because on it, there is no sun and moon. There is no chance of having the divine knowledge that can stop you from this path. When you leave this world, you will forget the love of Maya.

 Bhagat Tirlochan says: why shouldn’t we get rid of the Maya attachment now when we have the time to remember Akalpurakh?

Āj merai man pargat bẖa-i-ā hai pekẖī-ale ḏẖaramrā-o.

Ŧah kar ḏal karan mahābalī ṯin āglaṛai mai rahaṇ na jā-e. ||4||

Today, it has become clear in my mind that I have to see the righteous judge and the powerful carriers of death, who crush the lives with force. How can I stand up there?

Je ko mūʼn upḏes karaṯ hai ṯā vaṇ ṯariṇ raṯ-ṛā nārā-iṇā.

Ai jī ṯūʼn āpe sabẖ kicẖẖ jāṇḏā baḏaṯ Ŧrilocẖan rām-ī-ā. ||5||2||

Trilochan supplicates: Oh Akalpurakh! When someone instructs me that you are all pervading, I see you everywhere. You know everything.

Bhagat Tirlochan awakens the mortals from the Maya-slumber to focus on the Creator and love Him.

The Creator and Us

 Bhagat Ravi Das puts a few questions and answers those with his logic and understanding of the Creator  on 93, SGGS. Let us ponder over this very shabda:

 Sirīrāg. Ŧohī mohī mohī ṯohī anṯar kaisā. Kanak katik jal ṯarang jaisā. ||1||

Raag Sree Raag, the bani of Bhagat Ravidas.

In essence: Oh Akalpurakh! What is the difference between you and me? It is like a golden bracelet and the gold, and the water and its ripples.

Ja-o pai ham na pāp karanṯā ahe ananṯā. Paṯiṯ pāvan nām kaise hunṯā. ||1|| Rahā-o.

Oh infinite Akalpurakh! If we, mortals, do not commit sins, how your name will be known as the redeemer of the sinners? Pause.

   Ŧumĥ jo nā-ik ācẖẖahu anṯarjāmī. Parabẖ ṯe jan jānījai jan ṯe su-āmī. ||2||

Oh Knower of everyone’s heart! You are my guide; you are my Master. It is figured out from the master what kind of his servant is, and from the servant, the master is known.

   Sarīr ārāḏẖai mo ka-o bīcẖār ḏehū. Raviḏās sam ḏal samjẖāvai ko-ū. ||3||

Oh Akalpurakh! Bless me to meditate on you as long as this body is alive. Bless Ravidas with the company of those persons, who can explain that you pervade all equally.

 Bhagat Ravidas says that there is no difference between Akalpurakh and His creation; through the enlightened ones, Akalpurakh imparts the knowledge about His being pervading all equally.

Not in the hard ways.

  https://www.gursoch.com

As we learn, we know that to realize the Creator, in India, many ways were adopted by spiritual minded people, which led them to go astray without a guide who actually realized Him. On SGGS, 324, Bhagat Kabir guides such people by negating the importance of their paths. Here it is:

 Ga-oṛī Kabīr jī.

Nagan firaṯ jou pā-ī-ai jog. Ban kā mirag mukaṯ sabẖ hog. ||1||

Raag Gaurhi, the bani of Bhagat Kabir.

In essence: If by roaming naked one can unite with Ekankar, the deer of forest will be emancipated.

Ki-ā nāge ki-ā bāḏẖe cẖām. Jab nahī cẖīnas āṯam rām. ||1|| Rahā-o.

What can be obtained by living naked or wearing animal-skin if Ekankar is not realized? Pause.

Mūd mundā-e jou siḏẖ pā-ī. Mukṯī bẖed na ga-ī-ā kā-ī. ||2||

If by shaving one’s head, a spiritual perfection is obtained then why not any sheep has salvation?

Binḏ rākẖ jou ṯarī-ai bẖā-ī. Kẖusrai ki-o na param gaṯ pā-ī. ||3||

If by becoming celibate one gets saved, why should not a eunuch get liberation?

Kaho Kabīr sunhu nar bẖā-ī. Rām nām bin kin gaṯ pā-ī. ||4||4||(324)

Kabir says, “Oh Brothers! Without Akalpurakh’s name, whoever obtained salvation?”

Thus, Bhagat Kabir counsels the Creator-seekers to get imbued with His name means to live in His love. How to live in His love is taught by a Guru who has realized Him.

THUS, MAKES US THE GURU AWARE OF OUR FAULTS

  The second Guru Sahib explains how the true devotees should accept the ordinance of the Creator under which the mortals go through comforts and pains. The following his two slokas are on, SGGS, 474, lets ponder over them:

   Salok mėhlā 2.

Cẖākar lagai cẖākrī nāle gārab vāḏ. Galā kare gẖaṇerī-ā kẖasam na pā-e sāḏ.

Āp gavā-e sevā kare ṯā kicẖẖ pā-e mān. Nānak jis no lagā ṯis milai lagā so parvān. ||1||

Slok of Second Nanak.

In essence: If a servant serves but also gets into argument with his master, he cannot please his master. If he gets rid of his conceit and serves his master, then he gets respect. Oh Nanak! A person who serves his Master and becomes one with Him is accepted by Him (Prabh).

If our living is not according the Guru teachings, which include to overcome the five negative instincts like self-conceit, jealousy, anger, greed and deep attachment, and we question Him, we are bond to suffer. In the following shabda, the Guru makes it clear that by doing bad deeds we should not expect better life:

   Mėhlā 2.

Jo jī-e ho-e so ugvai muh kā kahi-ā vā-o. Bīje bikẖ mangai amriṯ vekẖhu ehu ni-ā-o. ||2||

Second Nanak.

In essence: Only that becomes manifest what is in one’s mind; just merely talk is meaningless. How much is this reasonable that one grows poisonous plants and expects nectar from them?

Thus, neither mere talking helps us nor the bad deeds.

Wishes.

Life Without The Creator’s Love

 https://www.gursoch.com/

Without getting involved with the Creator, all relations and achievements are useless; thus, one should clean one’s mind with the Guru advice and live in His love. Only important is His love, the Guru says on SGGS, 631:

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 9. Man kī man hī māhi rahī .

Nā har bẖaje na ṯirath seve cẖotī kāl gahī. ||1|| Rahā-o. {SGGS-631}

Raag Sorath, the bani of Ninth Nanak.

In essence: The desires of the mortal’s remained unfulfilled; he neither remembered Har, nor served Har’s devotees, and now the death has caught him by the hair. Pause.

Kindly look at this:

Nā har bẖaji-o na gur jan sevi-o nah upji-o kacẖẖ gi-ānā.” {SGGS-632}

In the Gurmat, Tirath/Pilgrimage is the Guru or His devotees’ company. The Guru doesn’t promote pilgrimage-concept. If in the History, the Guru went at pilgrimaging places,  his goal was to enlighten the seekers; the Guru says that by doing ablution at such places, the mind is not cleaned; therefore, taking the meaning of “Tirath” as pilgrimage is not right. Here is just one reference (1328 SGGS):

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 1.

Amriṯ nīr gi-ān man majan aṯẖsaṯẖ ṯirath sang gahe.

Gur upḏes javāhar māṇak seve sikẖ so kẖoj lahai. ||1|| {SGGS-1328}

Raag Parbhati, the bani of First Nanak.

In essence: The Guru’s nectar of divine knowledge of Akalpurakh is an ablution done on a pilgrimaging place; cleaning mind with this nectar (advice through the Gurbani) is equal to sixty-eight pilgrimages, and the Guru’s guidance is precious jewel. A person who follows the Guru obtains this jewel (His name) by searching it (with the help of Guru).

   Gur samān ṯirath nahī ko-e .  Sar sanṯokẖ ṯās gur ho-e. ||1|| Rahā-o. {SGGS-1328}

There is no other pilgrimage equal to the Guru (Here pilgrimage is used to convey the act of cleaning the filthy mind through living as per the Guru’s advice). No pilgrimage-ablution cleans the soul as the Guru does; therefore, no other pilgrimage is equal to the Guru); only the Guru is an ocean of contentment. Pause.

Back to the Shabda of Ninth Nanak:

Ḏārā mīṯ pūṯ rath sampaṯ ḏẖan pūran sabẖ mahī.

Avar sagal mithi-ā e jān-o bẖajan rām ko sahī. ||1|| {SGGS-631}

Oh Brother! All like wife, the sons, carriage, wealth, and the entire world are perishable; remember Prabh, who alone is eternal.

   Firaṯ firaṯ bahuṯe jug hāri-o mānas ḏeh lahī.

Nānak kahaṯ milan kī barī-ā simraṯ kahā nahī. ||2||2|| {SGGS-631}

Oh brother! By wandering through many ages, you got weary and now you have obtained human life. Oh Nanak! This is the time to meet Akalpurakh, why don’t you remember Him?

The Creator and us

Bhagat Ravidas on 93, SGGS, says that there is no difference between Akalpurakh and His creation; through the enlightened ones, Akalpurakh imparts the knowledge about His being pervading all equally. Let us ponder over that shabda of his:

Thus, understanding Him and creating an urge to be with Him is what Bhagat Ravidas advises us. And we must be beyond fear and animosity as He is because we want to be with Him.

Seeking Peace of Mind

Very interestingly, Shri Guru Angad Sahib counsels his followers that there is no end of our urges and wishes. And, they do not let us have a peace of mind. In this game, once we get trapped, we keep seeking various pleasures and forget our Creator. This Slok is on SGGS 147; let us ponder over it:

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 147}

The bani of Second Nanak.

In essence: The mouth remains insatiate with talking and the ears with hearing (different kind of stuff). The eyes remain insatiate with seeing. Every organ has its own different urge to have more and more. The hunger (all kinds of urges are defined above) doesn’t go away by merely talking. Oh Nanak! The hunger of desires (stated above) is satiated only if one utters Akalpurakh’s praises and gets drenched in His virtues.

 Basically, the Guru advises us that since these desires with no end keep us away from our peace of mind-state, we should fall in love with our Creator and start praising Him in love to be in peace.

 Wishes!

The Bani That Enlightens

 https://www.gursoch.com

On SGGS 1243, Shri Guru Angad Sahib explains how the philosophy of Shri Guru Nanak Sahib is better than those scriptures which take the believer into fruitless rituals while the mind remains engrossed in the Maya pursuits. Let us ponder over it:

Salok mėhlā 2. Kathā kahāṇī beḏīʼn āṇī pāp punn bīcẖār.

Ḏe ḏe laiṇā lai lai ḏeṇā narak surag avṯār.

Uṯam maḏẖim jāṯīʼn jinsī bẖaram bẖavai sansār.

Amriṯ baṇī ṯaṯ vakẖāṇī gi-ān ḏẖi-ān vicẖ ā-ī.

Gurmukẖ ākẖī gurmukẖ jāṯī surṯīʼn karam ḏẖi-ā-ī.

Hukam sāj hukmai vicẖ rakẖai hukmai anḏar vekẖai.

Nānak agahu ha-umai ṯutai ṯāʼn ko likī-ai lekẖai. ||1|| {SGGS –1243}

Slok of Second Nanak.

In essence: The teachings of the Vedas reflect on what a sin is and what a virtue is. It is told in there that what one gives here takes in the next life; thus, they take birth to be in hell and heaven (This is the detailed Karma expressed in those scriptures.). The world wanders in the doubt of high and low caste. The Guru’s nectarous bani expresses all about the origin, Akalpurakh; it has come through the divine knowledge obtained through Akalpurakh’s meditation. The Guru has uttered it and realized it and the followers contemplate it with Akalpurakh’s grace. (This is what Sikhi is all about). As per His Will, Akalpurakh fashions the creation, keeps it under His Ordinance and takes care of it.  Oh Nanak! First the conceit of the follower is eradicated and then he becomes acceptable to Akalpurakh.

Thus, in a nut shell, the Guru advises the followers to remain focus on improving themselves to be nice and worthy for the Creator. They need no ritual to please anyone but His meditation and praise.

THE CREATOR’S PRESENCE

 www.gursoch.com

On 138, SGGS, in a Waar “ Waar maajh ki”, penned by Shri Guru Nanak,  the Second Guru,  Shri Guru Angad Sahib addresses the behavior of those who live without keeping the Universal Creator in their hearts; however, he also states that actually they live as per His Will, thus, HE is everywhere; let us ponder over it:

The bani of Second Nanak.

In essence: The mind-slave prefers Ekankar’s given gifts to Ekankar, who actually gives those gifts to him. It is hard to explain what common sense, wisdom, and cleverness he (the mind-slave) has. Though he acts secretly, his actions become well known. One, who acts virtuously, is known as virtuous and that one, who commits sins, is known as sinner. Oh Har! This is your own play, because they act as you cause them to act. What else we should say? As long as your jyot (light)  is present in the mortals, they (actually you) speak; without your jyot, who can speak (none)? Oh Nanak! One can see the all wise and omnipotent Creator everywhere through the Guru.

Only Akalpurakh

Bhagat Kabir says this:

On SGGS 660, Bhagat Kabir clearly states that he only believes in the Universal Creator who permeates all :

Rāg ḏẖanāsrī baṇī bẖagaṯ Kabīr jī kī

Raag Dhanasri, the bani of Bhagat Kabir

Ik-oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

There is only One All Pervading Akalpurakh, who is known with the blessings of the Satiguru.

Sanak sanand mahes samānāʼn .

Sekẖnāg ṯero maram na jānāʼn. ||1||

In essence: Oh Prabh! Sanak, nand, Shiva and Sheshnaag didn’t know your secret.

Sanṯsangaṯ rām riḏai basā-ī. ||1|| Rahā-o.

In Akalpurakh’s true devotees’ association, I keep Akalpurakh in my heart. Pause.

 Hanūmān sar garuṛ samānāʼn .

Surpaṯ narpaṯ nahī gun jānāʼn. ||2||

Oh Prabh! Hanuman, Gararh, the master of Devtas, Indra, Brahma and the master of men didn’t know your virtues (didn’t know Akalpurakh).

Cẖār beḏ ar simriṯ purānāʼn .

Kamlāpaṯ kavlā nahī jānāʼn. ||3||

The four Vedas, the Simirities, the Pranas, Vishnu and Lakhsmi didn’t know you.

Kahi Kabīr so bẖarmai nāhī .

Pag lag rām rahai sarnāʼnhī. ||4||1||

(Who knows Akalpurakh then? Answer) Kabir says: That person who remains attached to Akalpurakh and stays in His refuge in utter humility doesn’t wander around.

Bhagat Kabir in this Shabda, very clearly states that for him no people, men or Devtas, matter but Akalpurakh. Thus, the Sikhs are to believe not any other power but the Universal Creator.

Our Plight

 https://www.gursoch.com

Under the influence of greed, lust, conceit, anger and attachment, the humans can do bad things which could bring their fall. Bhagat Ravidas addresses this with an example, the Shabad is on SGGS 486:

Ik-oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

There is only one All Pervading Akalpurakh, who is known with the blessings of the Satiguru.

Marig mīn bẖaring paṯang kuncẖar ek ḏokẖ binās.  Pancẖ ḏokẖ asāḏẖ jā mėh ṯā kī keṯak ās. ||1||

In essence: Only one weakness of the deer or the fish,  or the bumble bee  or the elephant destroys them; what is the chance of getting saved of the mortal, who has five vices  hard to cure?

The animals lack contemplation and unable to discriminate between good and evil, and it is very natural. The human existence is hard to obtain, but if one associates with the bad ones, shouldn’t one think about this?

Jī-a janṯ jahā jahā lag karam ke bas jā-e.  Kāl fās abaḏẖ lāge kacẖẖ na cẖalai upā-e. ||3||

Bound by the done deeds, wherever the beings are, they are subject to the noose of death, which is certain. And, nothing can be done about that.

Bẖagaṯ jan bẖai haran parmānanḏ karahu niḏān. ||4||1|| {SGGS-486}

(Prayer) Oh Destroyer of fear of your devotees! Bless me with the treasure of happiness. Bless your servant, Ravidas, so that he may become detached after abandoning his doubts and start doing real penance by living as per the Guru’s given guidance.

None Is Permanent Here

On 418, SGGS, Shri Guru Nanak Sahib reminds us to be aware of our limited time span on this earth. Basically, the Guru asks us to praise our Creator by understanding this fact that here is none permanent. Let us ponder over it:

Ik-oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

There is only one all-pervading Akalpurakh, who is known with the blessings of the Satiguru.

Āsā kāfī mėhlā 1 gẖar 8 asatpaḏī-ā.

Jaise go-il go-ilī ṯaise sansārā. Kūṛ kamāvėh āḏmī bāʼnḏẖėh gẖar bārā. ||1||

Raag Asa Kafi, the bani of First Nanak, house eighth, Ashtpadeean.

In essence: This world is temporary like the stay of herdsman on a bank of a river; the man practices falsehood by building houses as if he would live here forever (building and expanding the homes and deeming them as permanent).

Jāgahu jāgahu sūṯiho cẖali-ā vaṇjārā. ||1|| Rahā-o.

Oh people in slumber! Wake up. Look the dealer (of Maya expansions) is departing from here. Pause.

This is the Guru’s wake up call to his followers not to get attached with anything save for living  in this world as a guest modestly.

Nīṯ nīṯ gẖar bāʼnḏẖī-ah je rahṇā ho-ī. Pind pavai jī-o cẖalsī je jāṇai ko-ī. ||2||

Permanent house should be built if we can stay in them permanently. I hope they would realize this: when the body crumbles, the soul has to go.

Ohī ohī ki-ā karahu hai hosī so-ī. Ŧum rovhuge os no ṯumĥ ka-o ka-uṇ ro-ī. ||3||

Why are you crying over the dead? There is only Akalpurakh, who is now and who will be ever. You cry over the dead, but who will bewail for you (you will face the same end)?

Ḏẖanḏẖā pitihu bẖā-īho ṯumĥ kūṛ kamāvahu. Oh na suṇ-ī kaṯ hī ṯumĥ lok suṇavhu. ||4||

Oh brothers! You are into entanglement and you practice falsehood, because one, for whom you bewail, doesn’t hear you; therefore, you are showing only to the people.

Jis ṯe suṯā nānkā jāgā-e so-ī. Je gẖar būjẖai āpṇā ṯāʼn nīḏ na ho-ī. ||5||

Only Akalpurakh who has caused the mortal to be in the Maya slumber, awakens him.  If one recognizes one’s “inner self”, then one doesn’t sleep in Maya.

Je cẖalḏā lai cẖali-ā kicẖẖ sampai nāle. Ŧā ḏẖan sancẖahu ḏekẖ kai būjẖhu bīcẖāre. ||6||

Oh mortal! Think and reflect on this: If at the time of departing, you can take wealth with you, then you can gather it. See if you can!

   Vaṇaj karahu makẖsūḏ laihu maṯ pacẖẖoṯāvahu. A-ugaṇ cẖẖodahu guṇ karahu aise ṯaṯ parāvahu. ||7||

Deal in that (Akalpurakh’s name praising) which is profitable; don’t deal in that which makes you repent afterwards. Get rid of demerits and adopt virtues; this is the way Akalpurakh is obtained.

Ḏẖaram bẖūm saṯ bīj kar aisī kiras kamāvahu. Ŧāʼn vāpārī jāṇī-ahu lāhā lai jāvhu. ||8||

You sow the truthful conduct in the soil of your faith; this is the way, you work rightful way. Only then you can be called a trader, if you take profit with you.

Karam hovai saṯgur milai būjẖai bīcẖārā. Nām vakẖāṇai suṇe nām nāme bi-uhārā. ||9||

If Ekankar graces the mortal, he/she meets the Satiguru and reflects on these thoughts: he/she utters Ekankar’s name, hears it, and deals only in it.

Ji-o lāhā ṯotā ṯivai vāt cẖalḏī ā-ī. Jo ṯis bẖāvai nānkā sā-ī vadi-ā-ī. ||10||13||

The way of the world is that some people get profit and some endure loss. Oh Nanak! Ekankar’s greatness lies in what pleases Him.

The Spiritual Wisdom

www.gursoch.com

Bhagat Kabir Ji’s wisdom on 475, SGGS, is worth knowing about the Creator and us:

Āsā sarī Kabīr jī-o.

Gur cẖaraṇ lāg ham binvaṯā pūcẖẖaṯ kah jī-o pā-i-ā.

Kavan kāj jag upjai binsai kahhu mohi samjẖā-i-ā. ||1||

Raag Asa, the bani of Bhagat Kabir.

In essence: Bowing to my Guru humbly, I ask, “Why the mortal is created? What is the reason that the world comes into existence and perishes? Please explain it to me

   Ḏev karahu ḏa-i-ā mohi mārag lāvhu jiṯ bẖai banḏẖan ṯūtai.

Janam maran ḏukẖ feṛ karam sukẖ jī-a janam ṯe cẖẖūtai. ||1|| Rahā-o.

(The continuity of the thought) Oh Satiguru! Show your kindness by putting me on that path, which cuts my bonds off; consequently, I can get free from the done deeds, all the entanglements of life and the pain of birth and death. Pause.

It is obvious; Bhagat Kabir addresses a few questions expressed in the above verses. It appears he asks those questions from his Guru. As we study the interpretation of Dr. Sahib Singh, it is hard to understand if the asked questions are answered. The interpreter of Freed Kote Wala Teeka adds his own ideas. We shall try if we can get the idea Bhagat Kabir is trying to convey to us.

   Mā-i-ā fās banḏẖ nahī fārai ar man sunn na lūke.

Āpā paḏ nirbāṇ na cẖīnĥi-ā in biḏẖ abẖi-o na cẖūke. ||2||

In essence: (Answers) as long as one doesn’t get rid of the Maya bonds, one’s mind doesn’t settle in a state of equipoise. As long as one doesn’t realize one’s “inner self”, one’s doubts do not go away (what doubts? Are we separate from Him or we are His part and so on).

 Now, the question regarding why the world comes and goes is addressed:

   Kahī na upjai upjī jāṇai bẖāv abẖāv bihūṇā.

Uḏai asaṯ kī man buḏẖ nāsī ṯa-o saḏā sahj liv līṇā. ||3||

Actually, His creation is not separate in existence, but one thinks that way, because one lacks the understanding of Ekankar’s manifestation in the creation and also His being without any formally existence. Once one stops thinking about birth and death, one can go in the state of equipoise.

   Ji-o parṯibimb bimb ka-o milī hai uḏak kumbẖ bigrānā.

Kaho Kabīr aisā guṇ bẖaram bẖāgā ṯa-o man sunn samānāʼn. ||4||1||

We see the reflection of something in the pitcher full of water, and see it vanishing as the pitcher breaks down; in the same way is Prabh’s creation. Kabir says: If such understanding comes and the doubt about two separate existences goes away, the mind settles in the equipoise.

 Now let us look at the ideas Bhagat Kabir is conveying after putting some questions. Why the mortal is sent here? Answer is to understand one’s inner self: what is it. Second question: why the world comes and goes? Answer given is this that the bonds of Maya don’t allow the mind to dispel its duality and doubt. Because of that, the mortal cannot achieve the state of void (Sehaj). How these bonds can be broken? Answer is to understand one’s inner self. So, what is all this creation and why it is coming and going? Answer is that there is no existence without Ekankar. It comes like a reflection in the pitcher filled with water; we see a reflection in the water and it disappears, as the pitcher is broken. The soul is seen because of the body and its life, but both perish like the reflection in broken pitcher. As it was there because of water, the creation is there because of Ekankar.

How To Deal with The Commotion of The People

https://www.gursoch.com

Most of the people just get upset when a person starts believing what they don’t believe in because of their programmed minds. In this shabda, Bhagat Kabir ji is trying to explain how the people of his time, reacted as he started believing only in the Universal Creator. His shabda is on SGGS 324:

Ga-oṛī Kabīr jī.  Jab ham eko ek kar jāni-ā.  Ŧab logah kāhe ḏukẖ māni-ā. ||1||

Raag Gaurhi of Bhagat Kabir .

In essence: When I have realized that there is only one Akalpurakh, why people are upset?

 Bhagat Kabir is talking about his contemporary people who had belief in many gods or different faiths, and contrary to them, he believed in only one Creator. Humans are found of trashing others just because they cannot take disagreement positively. Talking about Him, they act ignorantly. Deeming themselves as genius, they create and establish the Creator in their own ways. Obviously, Bhagat Kabir stands in disagreement with them because of his belief in the Creator’s permeating His creation. Now he questions them about their unnecessary anger over his belief. They accuse him of losing his honor in the society by not following their convictions. It is very important to know that no story has anything to do with Bhagat Kabir’s Shabda; it is just his realized ultimate truth about the Creator, which is being passed on to us.

Ham apṯah apunī paṯ kẖo-ī.  Hamrai kẖoj parahu maṯ ko-ī. ||1|| Rahā-o.

(As per your thought) I am dishonored one, and I have lost my honor. On what path I tread, you do not need to tread on (you remain honored ones. It is ironical expression!). Pause.

 Bhagat Kabir says, “If your following of me takes away your honor, you don’t need to do that. So let me remain as I am, and let me believe what I want to. If you think that the real honor is in your way, keep thinking that way.”

Ham manḏe manḏe man māhī. Sājẖ pāṯ kāhū si-o nāhī. ||2||

If I am bad, it is me (what to others?). I am not into establishing relationships with others.

 Bhagat Kabir says, “Oh honored ones! Stay away from me to keep your honor!” It is very sarcastic statement! He is very clear about his mission of having union with the Creator, as he sees the hypocritical religious trends in other people through which they establish “receiving and giving honors to one another to feed their conceit.” He declares that this curtain of hypocrisy will be torn up at the end.

Paṯ apaṯ ṯā kī nahī lāj. Ŧab jānhuge jab ugẖraigo pāj. ||3||

I don’t care to have honor or dishonor (from you), but you will know the reality when your “cover up” will be exposed.

Bhagat Kabir is hinting at the false honor for which people live. For His devotee, it is Ekankar’s acceptance that supersedes all the worldly honors. Please also ponder over why Bhagat Kabir is saying that the “put up show” of people (of his time) will be exposed eventually. This is what all enlightened ones say, because they deem Ekankar’s acceptance as the real honor and His name, the real wealth. It shows how both “sansaree/worldly” and “bhgatas/His devotees” go opposite directions. The spiritual experience enables the enlightened ones to stand up against all the worldly belief of “honors and dishonors.”

Kaho Kabīr paṯ har parvān. Sarab ṯi-āg bẖaj keval rām. ||4||3||

The real honor is in fact Akalpurakh’s acceptance; for that, Oh Kabir! say this: forsake everything else and meditate only on Akalpurakh.

 Here Bhagat Kabir puts the secret about His path wide open. It is Akalpurakh’s acceptance which matters and not the worldly for His devotees. They do not need to worry about the worldly honor or dishonor. Remembering only the Creator is their first priority.

The Mind And Its Relation With The Creator

  https://www.gursoch.com

The shabda of Kabir on 330, SGGS, elaborates the relation of the mind with the Creator very clearly, let us ponder over it:

Rāg ga-oṛī gu-ārerī asatpaḏī Kabīr jī kī

Raag Gaurhi Guareri, Astpadee of Bhagat Kabir.

Ik-oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

There is only one All Pervading Akalpurakh, who is known through the blessings of the Satiguru.

Sukẖ māʼngaṯ ḏukẖ āgai āvai. So sukẖ hamhu na māʼngi-ā bẖāvai. ||1||

In essence: People pray for comfort, but the pain follows it; I don’t ask for the comfort, which is followed by pains.

Bikẖi-ā ajahu suraṯ sukẖ āsā. Kaise ho-ī hai rājā rām nivāsā. ||1|| Rahā-o.

Because we are into Maya, we hope for comforts. How can Akalpurakh, the King, take abode in our minds? Pause.

Is sukẖ ṯe siv barahm darānā. So sukẖ hamhu sācẖ kar jānā. ||2||

Because of the comforts, Shiva and Brahma repented, we deem that comfort as true.

Sankāḏik nāraḏ mun sekẖā. Ŧin bẖī ṯan mėh man nahī pekẖā. ||3||

Even the sages like Sanak, Narad , and Shesnaag couldn’t see it (the mind) in their bodies.

Is man ka-o ko-ī kẖojahu bẖā-ī. Ŧan cẖẖūte man kahā samā-ī. ||4||

Oh Brother! Someone should search the mind within and see when it separates from the body, where does it go?

Gur parsādī jaiḏe-o nāmāʼn. Bẖagaṯ kai parem in hī hai jānāʼn. ||5||

With the Guru’s blessings, Jaidev and Namdev found this fact (where the mind goes) through Akalpurakh’s love and devotion.

Is man ka-o nahī āvan jānā. Jis kā bẖaram ga-i-ā ṯin sācẖ pacẖẖānā. ||6||

A person whose doubt is dispelled knows the truth that this mind is not subject to coming and going (It doesn’t die, because it has no form; (Bhagat Kabir addresses that in the next verses).

Is man ka-o rūp na rekẖ-i-ā kā-ī. Hukme ho-i-ā hukam būjẖ samā-ī. ||7||

This mind has no form or outline; it is created with Akalpurakh’s ordinance and as per His ordinance, it understands Akalpurakh and gets merged in Him (If Akalpurakh doesn’t want, it doesn’t realize Him to merge with Him).

Is man kā ko-ī jānai bẖe-o. Ih man līṇ bẖa-e sukẖ-ḏe-o. ||8||

If a person knows the secret of his/her mind, he/she gets absorbed in Ekankar, the comfort- giver.

(Here is the secret:)

Jī-o ek ar sagal sarīrā. Is man ka-o rav rahe kabīrā. ||9||1||36||

Kabir contemplates that mind, which is actually one and it permeates all the bodies. (Obviously the mind is a part of Ekankar.)

Call it the mind or the soul, Bhagat Kabir makes it clear that the mind, when realizes Akalpurakh, merges with that mind that pervades all the bodies. It is very close description about knowing the Creator; it is the mind that runs into many directions, but it is also the mind that recognizes the presence of the Creator within. Bhagat Kabir addresses that the Creator’s presence is a part of the “big mind” that keeps presence in the lives; let me put it in different way, Ekankar is the infinite light that is pervading all; a part of that light exists in all and Bhagat Kabir calls it “the mind” a part of the big mind.

It is very important to know that no story has anything to do with Bhagat Kabir’s Shabda; it is just his realized ultimate truth about the Creator” which is being passed on to us.

Ham apṯah apunī paṯ kẖo-ī.

Hamrai kẖoj parahu maṯ ko-ī. ||1|| Rahā-o.

It is Akalpurakh’s acceptance, because the worldly opinion doesn’t matter for His devotees. They do not need to worry about the worldly honor or dishonor. Remembering only the Creator is their first priority.
